Abstract :
Potato (Solanum tuberosum) is a staple crop important in global food security. As a leading potato producer, China faces significant challenges from insect pest infestations that compromise yield and quality. However, insect communities within Chinese potato fields remain poorly characterized. This study aimed to explore insect diversity in potato fields in Yunnan Province. From autumn 2021 to summer 2022, five Malaise traps were strategically deployed to capture insect samples. In total, 245 samples were collected over 49 weeks, and DNA metabarcoding was performed on bulk samples. The generated sequences were curated and analyzed using the Barcode of Life Data System and the Multiplex Barcode Research and Visualization Environment. The analysis assigned sequences to 1,688 Barcode Index Numbers (BINs) as species proxies derived from the Global Insecta Library, along with 166 BINs from the China Insecta dataset. This research provides valuable insights for barcoding local biodiversity and developing regional reference libraries and presents a comprehensive dataset of insect biodiversity within potato agroecosystems, encompassing 1,707 BINs linked to known insect taxa.

Abstract :
The demography and leaf consumption of the tea geometrid, Ectropis grisescens Warren (Lepidoptera: Geometridae), were studied on two cultivars of tea, Camellia sinensis (L.) cv. 'Fuding Dabaicha' (FDDB) and cv. 'Rougui' (RG). The head widths of E. grisescens instars adhered to Dyar's rule, with no overlap between instars, allowing for accurate estimation of field population stage structure during pest management studies. Leaf consumption increased geo-metrically with each instar at rates of 3.6335 for FDDB and 3.2048 for RG. The intrinsic rate of increase and finite rate of increase of E. grisescens on FDDB (r = 0.1669 d-1, lambda = 1.1817 d-1) were higher than those on RG (r = 0.1482 d-1, lambda = 1.1598 d-1). Similarly, the net consumption rate (C0 = 37.5 cm2) and finite consumption rate (omega beta = 4.0185 d-1) of E. grisescens on FDDB were significantly higher than those on RG (C0 = 29.05 cm2 and omega beta = 2.9211 d-1). Given that only young shoots (single bud with two leaves) are manually harvested for high-quality tea production, distinct economical thresholds are required for the harvest and post-harvest seasons. The geometrical ratio of consumption rate could be utilized to simulate the pest damage, yielding results comparable to those derived from detailed daily consumption rate. Integrating demographic parameters, leaf consumption, season-specific economic thresholds, geometrical ratios of leaf consumption rates, and head width data would significantly enhance the integrated pest management program using computer simulation based on the age-stage, two-sex life table.

Abstract :
Understanding the effect of temperature on the demographic characteristics and predation rate of a predator on the target pest is crucial for an effective biological control. In this study, the life table and predation rate of Arma custos reared on Ectropis grisescens were studied at three temperatures (22, 26, and 30 degrees C). The raw data were analyzed based on the age-stage, two-sex life table theory. The preadult duration and total preoviposition period (TPOP) were significantly shortened at higher temperatures. Although there were no significant differences in the mean fecundity and the net reproductive rate among three temperatures, the intrinsic rate of increase (r) and finite rate of increase (2) at 26 degrees C (r = 0.0549 d-1, 2 = 1.0565 d-1) and 30 degrees C (r = 0.0609 d-1, 2 = 1.0628 d-1) were significantly higher than those at 22 degrees C (r = 0.0281 d-1, 2 = 1.0285 d-1). The highest net predation rate (C0 = 73.95 prey/predator) observed at 26 degrees C was significantly greater than that at 22 degrees C (C0 = 47.92 prey/predator) and 30 degrees C (C0 = 39.63 prey/predator). There were no significant differences in the transformation rate (Qp), the stable predation rate (psi beta) and the finite predation rate (omega beta) among the three temperatures. Computer simulation indicated that population growth and predation potential were higher at 26 and 30 degrees C than at 22 degrees C. In order to optimize the release strategies and the control efficacy using A. custos against E. grisescens, field trials are needed to consider the possible differences between data collected under the laboratory condition and actual tea plantations.

Abstract :
Introduction Thrips are key vectors for plant viruses, representing a significant challenge to the cultivation of cucurbits and other vegetables in tropical agriculture. This study investigates the diversity of viromes carried by thrips and their ecological roles in viral epidemics affecting specific crops. Methods We identify thrips populations in tropical regions and perform a comprehensive virome analysis through high-throughput sequencing. Results Our findings reveal that the predominant thrips species associated with these crops are Frankliniella intonsa, Thrips palmi, and Megalurothrips usitatus. The sequencing efforts identified 19 viruses within these thrips, including previously undocumented viruses, such as a double-stranded RNA virus and several positive- and negative-sense single-stranded RNA viruses. Notably, detection rates of specific plant viruses-Melon yellow spot virus (MYSV), Watermelon silver mottle virus (WSMoV), and Telosma mosaic virus (TeMV)-exhibit significant correlations with thrips population density in cucurbits and other vegetables.Discussion This study lays the groundwork for future research into the ecological relationships between thrips and plant viruses, offering valuable insights for developing targeted disease management strategies in tropical agricultural systems.

Abstract :
Tomato leafminer (TLM), Phthorimaea absoluta Meyrick, and the potato tuber moth (PTM), Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller), are significant invasive pests with similar ecological niches, investigated interspecific competition and reproductive interference of TLM and PTM on 2 host plants the species have in common, tobacco and potato. In cage experiments PTM replaced TLM after 2 successive generations on tobacco and TLM replaced PTM after 3 generations on potato. In tobacco experiments, PTM did not significantly affect the oviposition of TLM. Conversely, TLM presence stimulated PTM oviposition: PTM egg-laying was significantly higher in groups exposed to female TLM adults (110.81 +/- 7.59 eggs/female) or male TLM adults (112.17 +/- 5.87 eggs/female) compared to the PTM-only control group (90.81 +/- 4.89 eggs/female). In potato experiments, there were no significant differences among treatments. In tobacco greenhouse experiments, when TLM was in the presence of PTM, the number of F1 adults of TLM decreased significantly. In the presence of TLM, there was a significant increase in the number of PTM adults in the F1 generation. In potato greenhouse experiments, our results showed no significant differences in the counts of F1 generation adults or the sex ratio. Interspecific interactions were asymmetric depending on the host plant. On tobacco, PTM exhibited stronger competitiveness and was able to displace TLM. However, on potato, TLM displaced PTM, indicating a stronger competitive ability of TLM on that host. These results demonstrate the importance of context, including host plant or other environmental conditions, when assessing the potential strength and direction of interspecific interactions.

Abstract :
In this study, we compared the growth, development, and fecundity of Arma chinensis (Fallou) reared on pupae of the geometrid Ectropis grisescens Warren fed on tea shoots during different seasons of the year. The raw data on life history were analyzed using the age-stage, 2-sex life table. When reared on spring or winter geometrid pupae, the duration of the immature stage of A. chinensis was significantly longer than in those produced during the summer or autumn. The survival rate of immature A. chinensis reared on autumn geometrid pupae was significantly lower compared to other treatments. Reproductive diapause was observed in adult A. chinensis reared on winter geometrid pupae. The adult preoviposition period (APOP), total preoviposition period (TPOP), and total longevity were significantly longer in A. chinensis reared on winter pupae than in the other treatments. The fecundity of A. chinensis reared on spring geometrid pupae was significantly lower than in the other treatments. The higher intrinsic rate of increase of the A. chinensis reared on summer pupae (r = 0.0966 day-1) and autumn pupae (r = 0.0983 day-1) resulted in higher fecundity, shorter immature duration, and shorter TPOP compared to the winter and spring populations. These findings can be utilized to enhance and sustain biological control of E. grisescens in tea plantations. Graphical Abstract
