Abstract :
Rapid, sensitive and specific detection of foodborne pathogens is of great significance to the early warning and prevention of foodborne diseases and environmental pollution. Here, an electrochemiluminescent (ECL) biosensor with the cascaded reaction between two nanozymes was developed for the detection of E. coli O157:H7. Cobalt single-atom catalyst (Co-SAC@NC) with oxidase (OD) -like activity, as a co-reaction accelerator of O-2, catalyzed oxygen to reactive oxygen species (ROSs) and boosted ECL of luminol-O-2 system. Another nanozyme CeO2@mrGO with excellent phosphatase-like activity by the introduction of Fe was use to label Ab. CeO2@mrGO captured E. coli O157:H7, and then combined with Ap on the electrode surface through the affinity of aptamer and antibody to form a sandwich structure on the gold electrode (CeO2@mrGO-Ab/E. coli O157:H7/Ap-AuE). CeO2@mrGO converted AAP into AA, which consumed ROS and quenched ECL emission of luminol-O-2 system. As a consequence, this ECL sensor had a linear response range of 17-1.7 x 10(5) CFU/mL with LOD of 2.78 CFU/mL. This aptamer-antibody birecognized system was able to be applied to assay E. coli O157:H7 in untreated contaminated milk samples with satisfactory results.

Abstract :
The escalating prevalence of multidrug-resistant Gram-positive bacterial infections demands the development of antimicrobial agents with precise targeting and rapid bactericidal activity. In this study, ultra-small positively-charged carbon dots (PR-CDs) were synthesized through a one-step hydrothermal synthesis of polyethyleneimine and Rhodamine B. The resulting PR-CDs exhibited multiple antibacterial mechanisms: (1) electrostatic attraction to Gram-positive bacterial membranes, (2) cellular internalization enabled by their ultra-small size (2.3 nm), and (3) visible light-activated reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. PR-CDs have shown selective bactericidal activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and other Gram-positive pathogens with minimum bactericidal concentrations as low as 19.53 mu g mL-1 under light irradiation. Mechanistic studies revealed that the positive charges on the surface of PR-CDs facilitated selective binding to teichoic acid-rich Gram-positive cell walls, while their nanoscale dimensions permitted deep penetration into bacterial cells, enhancing oxidative damage through rapid generation of singlet oxygen (1O2). Encapsulation of PR-CDs in gellan gum (PR-CDs@GG) hydrogels enabled sustained ROS release and accelerated MRSA-infected wound healing in MRSA-infected mice, achieving 82.51% wound closure within 8 days without systemic toxicity. This work establishes a paradigm for precision antimicrobial design via integrating targeted binding, cellular penetration, and photodynamic activation.

The synthesis and characterization of pH-sensitive boron and nitrogen co-doped CDs (B, N-CDs) is reported. The fluorescence of B, N-CDs exhibited pH-responsive behavior within the range pH 3.0-6.0, attributed to their controlled aggregation and disaggregation. Interestingly, the fluorescence of B, N-CDs was quenched by the inner filter effect from chrome azurol S (CAS). With the subsequent addition of Al3+, the fluorescence of B, N-CDs was restored due to the formation of blue Al3+-CAS and B, N-CDs-Al3+ complexes. Consequently, a fluorescent and colorimetric dual-mode sensor for Al3+ detection was developed. The proposed sensor enabled Al3+ detection in the ranges and limits of detection of 3.75-22.5 mu M and 2.67 mu M for the fluorescent mode and 5-20 mu M and 4.8 mu M for the colorimetric mode, respectively. Furthermore, the efficacy of the sensor was validated through successful detection of Al3+ in tablet samples. The obtained B, N-CDs promised the application in acid condition and the proposed sensor is expected to be applied to in situ on-line detection of Al3+.

Abstract :
Bacterial infectious diseases are severe threats to human health and increase substantial financial burdens. Nanomaterials have shown great potential in timely and accurate bacterial identification, detection, and monitoring to improve the cure rate and reduce mortality. Recently, carbon dots have been evidenced to be ideal candidates for bacterial identification and detection due to their superior physicochemical properties and biocompatibility. This review outlines the detailed recognition elements and recognition strategies with functionalized carbon dots (FCDs) for bacterial identification and detection. The advantages and limitations of different kinds of FCDs-based sensors will be critically discussed. Meanwhile, the ongoing challenges and perspectives of FCDs-based sensors for bacteria sensing are put forward.

Abstract :
Bacterial infections and inflammation pose a severe threat to human health and the social economy. The existence of super-bacteria and the increasingly severe phenomenon of antibiotic resistance highlight the development of new antibacterial agents. Due to low cytotoxicity, high biocompatibility, and different antibacterial mechanisms from those for antibiotics, functionalized carbon dots (FCDs) promise a new platform for the treatment of bacterial infectious diseases. However, few articles have systematically sorted out the available antibacterial mechanisms for FCDs and their application in the treatment of bacterial inflammation. This review focuses on the available antibacterial mechanisms for FCDs, including covalent and non-covalent interactions, reactive oxygen species, photothermal therapy, and size effect. Meanwhile, the design of antibacterial FCDs is introduced, including surface modification, doping, and combination with other nanomaterials. Furthermore, this review specifically concentrates on the research advances of antibacterial FCDs in the treatment of bacterial inflammation. Finally, the advantages and challenges of applying FCDs in practical antimicrobial applications are discussed. Antimicrobial mechanisms of functionalized carbon dots: covalent and non-covalent interactions, reactive oxygen species, photothermal effect, and size effect (E. coli was used as a model).

Fluorescent polydopamine nanoparticles (PDA NPs) have been effectively synthesized by means of self-polymerization of dopamine under the strong alkaline condition of ethylenediamine at room temperature for 2.5 h. The obtained PDA NPs displayed excellent optical properties under the conditions of high ion strength and wide pH range. Utilizing the fluorescent signal of PDA NPs, a fluorescence turn-off sensor for tartrazine detection is proposed. The fluorescence signal changes linearly depending on the tartrazine concentration range of 1.5-45 mu M, and a detection limit of 0.55 mu M was obtained. The mechanism studies showed that the fluorescence quenching procedure is ascribed to the combined effects of the inner filter and the generation of non-fluorescent ground state complexes between PDA NPs and tartrazine via strong electrostatic interactions. The satisfactory results of the proposed sensor when applied to tartrazine detection in soft drinks and candies promise its practicality for real food samples.

Hydrothermal treatment of m-phenylenediamine and grape seed powder has been adopted to synthesize nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs). The prepared N-CQDs possessed outstanding optical properties and high quantum yield. Based on the combined effect of static quenching effect and inner filter effect of permanganate (MnO4-) to N-CQDs and the redox reaction that occurred between MnO4- and l-ascorbic acid (l-AA), an 'off-on' fluorescence strategy with N-CQDs has been proposed for the detection of MnO4- and l-AA. The proposed fluorescent probe was fast, sensitive and selective to MnO4- and l-AA under mild conditions. In addition, the satisfactory results of the proposed strategy for the detection of MnO4- and l-AA in real samples indicated its practicability.
