Study on the characteristics of bird communities in urban river corridor parks and green spaces SCIE
期刊论文 | 2025 | ENVIRONMENT DEVELOPMENT AND SUSTAINABILITY
Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

Urbanization is significantly affecting urban bird communities, and green spaces in urban river corridor parks provide important shelters and food sources for urban birds, which are important for maintaining the stability of urban ecosystems. This study used nine parks along the Min River in Fuzhou City as the research objects. The study sites were divided into three gradients, U1, U2, and U3, from high to low degrees of urbanization disturbance to explore the differences of bird communities in parks along the riverbanks in areas with different degrees of urbanization. The results showed that: (1) A total of 4941 birds of 78 species were recorded, belonging to 9 orders, 36 families, and 59 genera, with 73.03% of the bird species of the order Passeriformes and the U1 area having the largest number of omnivorous and upper-stratum guild birds. (2) The Shannon index and Chao1 index of birds in summer in the study site differed significantly from those of other seasons, and the species composition of bird communities varied significantly among different seasons. (3) Among the parks in areas with different degrees of urbanization, the highest bird diversity index was found in the U2 area, and there were seasonal differences in the beta-diversity of birds in the three parks with different degrees of urbanization disturbance. (4) Bird abundance was significantly and positively correlated with the Shannon diversity index and the Chao1 index of birds in parks along rivers but not significantly correlated with the Shannon diversity index and the Chao1 index in areas with high urbanization disturbance. Meanwhile, abundance was the key factor influencing the change in bird community structure. Overall, green spaces in urban river corridor parks play an important role in protecting urban biodiversity and species migration, and the protection and enhancement of bird populations are beneficial to improving biodiversity in riverine areas. Therefore, in the process of future urban development, relevant protection measures should be proposed and implemented according to the specific conditions of bird communities in different areas, especially in highly disturbed areas, where emphasis should be placed on the attraction of other bird species and the creation of habitats, and the reasonable mixing of garden plants planted to provide habitats and food resources for riverine organisms.

Decentralized Coupled Grey-Green Infrastructure for Resilient and Cost-Effective Stormwater Management in a Historic Chinese District SCIE
期刊论文 | 2025 , 17 (15) | WATER
Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

Coupled grey and green infrastructure (CGGI) offers a promising pathway toward sustainable stormwater management in historic urban environments. This study compares CGGI and conventional grey infrastructure (GREI)-only strategies across four degrees of layout centralization (0%, 33.3%, 66.7%, and 100%) in the Quanzhou West Street Historic Reserve, China. Using a multi-objective optimization framework integrating SWMM simulations, life-cycle cost (LCC) modeling, and resilience metrics, we found that the decentralized CGGI layouts reduced the total LCC by up to 29.6% and required 60.7% less green infrastructure (GI) area than centralized schemes. Under nine extreme rainfall scenarios, the GREI-only systems showed slightly higher technical resilience (Tech-R: max 99.6%) than CGGI (Tech-R: max 99.1%). However, the CGGI systems outperformed GREI in operational resilience (Oper-R), reducing overflow volume by up to 22.6% under 50% network failure. These findings demonstrate that decentralized CGGI provides a more resilient and cost-effective drainage solution, well-suited for heritage districts with spatial and cultural constraints.

Estimating the vegetable yield and carbon reduction benefits of urban agriculture in Fuzhou based on planting intensity SCIE
期刊论文 | 2025 , 133 | SUSTAINABLE CITIES AND SOCIETY
Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

Urban agriculture (UA) can enhance food system resilience while reducing carbon emissions linked to longdistance food transport. Yet assessing its production potential and mitigation benefits across diverse planting scenarios remains challenging. This study develops an integrated framework that combines GIS-based land suitability analysis, multi-criteria decision making (MCDM), and the Denitrification-Decomposition (DNDC) model. Using Fuzhou, China as a case study, the framework identifies fragmented yet suitable spaces for UA and evaluates crop-specific trade-offs under intensive, semi-intensive, and extensive planting scenarios. The results reveal that suitable land within the urban core is scarce, with only 41.32 hm2 (0.24%) classified as highly suitable, 139.82 hm2 (0.81%) as moderately suitable, and 1509.74 hm2 (8.7%) as slightly suitable. Scenario simulations show strong gradients in mitigation outcomes. Local vegetable cultivation could reduce CO2 emissions by 586.14 t under intensive planting, 2569.46 t under semi-intensive planting, and 23,985 t under extensive planting each year. Lettuce provides the largest transport-related reductions, tomato combines strong sequestration potential with higher production emissions, and potato contributes modestly but supports dietary diversity. The study highlights the value of integrating crop growth, transport avoidance, and production emissions in a multi-scenario framework. The findings provide policy-relevant insights for scaling UA, including the promotion of semi-intensive strategies, targeted crop allocation, and supportive measures such as rooftop utilization rules, carbon-credit incentives, and electrified logistics. More broadly, the framework offers transferable tools for cities seeking to align food security with carbon neutrality goals.

Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

Urban biodiversity is directly influenced by land use; however, the role of land use is often overlooked in urban landscape design, particularly regarding the effects of landscape context and the synergistic interactions between land-use patches on biodiversity. Based on high-resolution (1 m) remote sensing (RS) imagery and a one-year field survey, in this study, we systematically examined the effects of various landscape environmental factors and land-use combinations on butterfly diversity within the urban riparian parks in Fuzhou (China), focusing on different families (namely, Lycaenidae, Nymphalidae, Papilionidae, Pieridae, and Riodinidae) and wingspan groups (small, medium, medium to large, and large). Multiple linear regression model (MLR) based on corrected Akaike information criterion (AICc) and the Geographical detector model (GD) were employed to quantify these effects. The results indicated that 1) the Abundance of Papilionidae and Nymphalidae were notably lower than those of Pieridae and Lycaenidae, but their Richness was high, necessitating targeted conservation measures. 2) Reducing the distance to high-quality regions could improve urban butterfly diversity. 3) Increasing the complexity of water-body boundaries within parks improved butterfly Richness and Abundance. 4) Larger butterflies exhibited greater sensitivity to woodland presence, water-body configuration, and connectivity with mountainous regions. 5) Increased complexity of water-body boundaries and the synergistic effects of woodland and grassland patches positively influenced the Richness of Papilionidae and Nymphalidae. 6) The combination of woodland, grassland, and water bodies significantly enhanced the diversity of different families and wingspan groups, with their synergistic effects and ecological preferences jointly influencing the spatial patterns of urban butterfly diversity. Overall, this study highlights the role of surrounding landscape and water-body configurations in improving urban butterfly diversity, while highlighting the potential of utilizing the synergistic effects of specific land-use combinations to further improve urban butterfly biodiversity. Aligning landscape patch configurations with the ecological needs of butterflies could support butterfly diversity in urban parks. Notably, our study can serve as a reference for the design and selection of butterfly-friendly green spaces.

Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

The emergence of urban forest trails provides more opportunities for the public to access nature. Environmental health factors, as important elements in the forest natural environment, are important for improving public health and enhancing environmental well-being. However, the scientific understanding of the vegetation characteristics of urban forest trails influencing environmental health factors is still needed to be further explored. Based on the field survey, we selected Fu Forest Tail as the site and 21 sample sites were delineated to collect data on vegetation characteristics and environmental health factors. The effects of vegetation characteristics and their roles were explored using variance, correlation, ridge regression and interaction effect analysis. The results indicated some differences in the mechanisms of how vegetation characteristics affect different environmental health factors. Diameter at breast height, the percentage of evergreen trees, canopy density, leaf area index, and vegetation diversity are among those that have a substantial impact on environmental health factors, while interactions between vegetation characteristics could also have different significant effects on environmental health factors. These results reflect the key vegetation characteristics that affect the environmental health factors and can provide scientific guidance and theoretical basis for future urban forest trail planning and urban forestry construction.

Exploring the Diurnal Dynamics Mechanism of the Cold Island Effect in Urban Parks of Island Cities: A Three-Dimensional Spatial Morphology Perspective SCIE
期刊论文 | 2025 , 16 (10) | ATMOSPHERE
Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

Urban parks play a crucial role in mitigating urban heat stress and maintaining ecological stability through their cold island effect (PCIE). However, studies examining how multidimensional urban morphology influences these effects, particularly from a diurnal perspective in island cities, remain limited. This study investigates 30 representative urban parks within a typical island city, exploring how two-dimensional and three-dimensional spatial morphological factors affect four key PCIE indicators: park cooling intensity (PCI), park cooling gradient (PCG), park cooling area (PCA) and park cooling efficiency (PCE) across different times of day and night. The results reveal that: (1) coastal zones exhibit significantly lower land surface temperature (LST) than inland zones, with peak LST occurring at 5:00 p.m.; (2) the four cold island indicators follow a diurnal pattern of 5:00 p.m. > 1:00 a.m. > 7:00 a.m.; (3) morphological construction factors-such as building density (BD) and built-up proportion (BP)-positively contribute to cooling effects at 7:00 a.m., while park perimeter (PP) enhances cooling performance at both 5:00 p.m. and 1:00 a.m. Additionally, vegetation characteristics surrounding parks, including the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and green space proportion (GP), influence daytime cooling in directions opposite to those of the aforementioned construction-related factors. These findings offer valuable insights into the temporal dynamics and spatial determinants of urban park cooling in island cities, providing a scientific basis for scientifically informed park planning and contributing to healthier and more sustainable urban development.

Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

Rapid urbanization has exacerbated the urban heat island (UHI) effect, while limited urban space restricts the implementation of blue-green space-based infrastructure for climate adaptation and urban cooling. To address this, the Cold Island Network (CIN) approach integrates cold island resources to enhance synergistic cooling effects within a holistic network. This study focuses on Fuzhou City, one of China's "top ten furnace cities." Using land surface temperature inversion, we analyzed the spatial characteristics of UHI. Based on Circuit Theory (CT), the CIN was constructed by integrating 2D and 3D urban indicators and anthropogenic heat data. The results showed that 217 Cold Island Core Sources, 324 cooling corridors, 76 cooling nodes along with 90 heating nodes were identified. The structural stability of the CIN under different scenarios were derived through complex network simulation and evaluation. Results show that the constructed CIN is resilient to interference, prioritizing high-centrality patches is a cost-effective way to enhance its robustness. Corridors and nodes were verified through satellite imagery and field surveys to ensure accuracy, based on which corridors were categorized to guide targeted planning strategies. Our results offer valuable insights into climate-resilient urban planning and UHI mitigation, contributing to urban sustainable development.

Abstract :

Ecosystems depend on biodiversity; therefore, protecting biodiversity is beneficial for the development of ecosystems. Butterflies are indicator species that respond quickly to environmental changes and reflect environmental conditions. Butterfly diversity is a crucial evaluation indicator of habitat quality in green spaces. We used CiteSpace and Bibliometrix to conduct a bibliometric analysis of research relating to butterfly diversity in green spaces. Based on 538 papers published from 2002-2022, we systematically reviewed the status, frontiers, and hotspots for research on butterfly diversity in green spaces. Our results showed that: (1) Research on butterfly diversity in green spaces has consistently demonstrated an upward trend between 2002-2022. Studies on this subject have garnered attention from researchers worldwide, with notable interest and contributions from scholars in the United States. (2) Early studies focused on butterfly habitat preferences and extinction concerns, and later articles appeared on the influence of external environmental factors (land use, climate change, plants, etc.). (3) Three main research topics received much attention between 2002 and 2022: biodiversity conservation, butterfly habitats, and the relationship between butterfly diversity and its influencing factors. (4) The relationship between green spaces and butterfly diversity (landscape features, vegetation features, and human activities) was discussed; these factors on butterfly communities should be considered in the planning and constructing of future green spaces. (5) Two significant future directions have been identified: more research on the impact of external factors and a need for more technical integration with the big data field. Future research on butterfly diversity in green spaces should adopt a more multi-scale, multi-disciplinary approach and aim to enhance the practicality and guidance of research findings.
