Positive feedback from woodpeckers on deadwood decomposition via invertebrates SCIE

Abstract :

Plant matter decomposition is a linchpin of global carbon cycling,1,2 yet the role of vertebrates remains poorly understood .3 Woodpeckers are ubiquitous vertebrate inhabitants of forests, where they hack into deadwood to forage for small animals. Our study in a temperate forest revealed not only how this behavior significantly impacts deadwood decomposition through mechanical breakdown but also how its species specificity leads to positive feedback on decomposition rates. Investigating large logs from six conifer species over 6 years in a tree cemetery, we found that woodpeckers accelerated decomposition (both mass and volume losses) selectively in softer, more decomposable deadwood like that of Norway spruce ( (Picea abies), which hosted abundant wood-boring beetle larvae relative to the abundances in other tree species. This selectivity triggers a positive feedback loop: bottom-up drivers (low wood density and high water-holding capacity) foster abundant invertebrate prey, promoting top-down woodpecker foraging that fragments logs and exposes inner tissues to microbial decay. Positioning woodpeckers as a potential keystone wood decay agent, our study supports the growing call for integrating vertebrate contributions into global carbon cycling models.4 As the first study to elucidate the complex interactions between deadwood traits, invertebrate populations, and woodpecker activities, we aim to galvanize further research into their often-overlooked functional role as deadwood fragmenters. The conservation implications of these findings are profound, especially in light of the historical context where vertebrates that once performed key ecological functions are now endangered or extinct due to widespread anthropogenic activities.5-9

生成式人工智能技术下风景园林教育个性化人才培养研究

Abstract :

生成式人工智能技术的兴起,为风景园林教育个性化人才培养提供了新契机。当前,风景园林教育尚处于教学资源、过程与评价数字化的初阶探索阶段,且大多基于OBE成果导向教育等底线达成度理念,构建相对“标准化”导向的人才培养模式。响应“AI+教育”变革的风景园林教育研究,很有必要向数智化、个性化方向加强探索。因此,亟待开展生成式人工智能技术下风景园林教育个性化人才培养的教改研究。基于多元智能理论,面向风景园林教育教学,厘清数智化、个性化教改研究新进展的经验与启示。在此基础上,分三个层面、6个维度进行数智化、个性化导向下风景园林教育转型的问题解析,并从探明生成式人工智能(Generative Artificial Intelligence,GenAI)技术驱动风景园林教育教学数智化转型的机制与路径、构建GenAI技术下风景园林教育个性化人才培养新模式两个方面、8个小点提出了系统性的应对思路。以此为指导,选取福建农林大学风景园林国家级一流本科专业建设点为对象,从打造“多元智能+”培养方案、推动“个性化+”人才培养、构建“GenAI+”教育教学体系、建设高质量教学保障体系4个方面,开展GenAI技术下风景园林教育个性化人才培养的初步实践与探索。以期探索“四新”建设、数字赋能等时代背景下风景园林教育高质量发展新路径,也为相关学科专业提供经验与借鉴。

随着信息技术与教育数字化转型的持续推进,风景园林专业人才培养面临更高要求。基于“数智化+OBE”理念,以福建农林大学风景园林国家一流专业为例,探索风景园林专业人才培养体系的创新与重构。通过引入成果导向教育(Outcome-Based Education,OBE)理念,结合数智化技术,构建以培养目标为核心、课程体系为支撑、实践教学为抓手的多维育人模式。“数智化+OBE”理念能够有效整合数智化技术与专业教学,实现教育活动的反向设计,确保教育质量与市场需求同步。福建农林大学通过优化课程体系、提升实践教学、强化跨学科融合,显著提升学生的专业技能、创新能力和实践水平。研究成果为新时代风景园林专业人才培养提供了理论依据和实践参考,对其他高校相关专业的教学改革具有重要借鉴意义。

山地城市荒野林地植物物种多样性及更新能力——以重庆中心城区为例

城市荒野是城市生物多样性保护的重要物种种源地,提供了高质量的生态系统服务。重庆作为典型山地城市,大量分布着以自然过程为主导的城市荒野片段。以重庆中心城区城市荒野林地为研究对象,通过对77个样地、313个样方的群落调查,分析了不同荒野生境中植物物种组成、多样性和更新能力特征及生境间的变化,探讨了植物物种来源、种子传播方式、更新能力与植物物种多样性的相关性。结果表明:(1)调查共记录到116科307属434种植物,乡土植物(79.03%)丰富,自生植物(82.95%)占比显著,种子的传播方式以动物传播(45.54%)为主。(2)98.08%的样方能够实现自我更新,更新乔木树种共计29科53属65种,其物种组成与乔木层相似度较高,相似性指数≥0.50,且乔木层优势种表现出良好的再生能力,不同生境间,更新物种组成存在一定差异,天然荒野生境中更新乔木树种比例和样方比例均最高。(3)不同垂直层片间,植物物种多样性指数(除Pielou均匀度指数外)表现出乔木层<灌木层<草本层。不同生境间,乔木层的Pielou均匀度指数和草本层的Patrick丰富度指数在3类生境中无显著性差异(P>0.05),其余各层次的植物物种多样性指数差异性显著(P<0.01),天然荒野生境中植物物种多样性指数最大。(4)乡土植物、自生植物、动物传播植物、更新层植物物种丰富度与各层次植物物种多样性呈显著正相关(P<0.05)。根据研究结果,建议加强山地城市荒野林地的分类保护,在山地城市植被的恢复中,因地制宜选择植物,多营造以自生植物、乡土植物、动物传播型植物为主体,能够实现持续自我更新的“近自然林”。

Mapping Re-Naturalization Pathways for Urban Ecological Governance: A Spatial Decision-Support Framework Based on Ecosystem Service Valuation SSCI

Traditional urban expansion struggles to balance economic and ecological demands. Intensive development planning based on re-naturalization has become the policymakers' choice. However, planning-oriented land use patterns and re-naturalization pathways remain difficult to determine. This study developed a spatial decision-support framework integrating ecosystem service valuation (ESV), land-use simulation, and ecological planning for Shanghai. This study assessed the spatiotemporal dynamics of ESV and simulated land use patterns and ESV for 2035 under different scenarios (inertial development, cropland protection, and ecological development). The optimal scenario and corresponding re-naturalization pathways were determined based on the principle of the optimal ESV. The results showed that ESV has declined over the past 20 years (-5.21%/5 years). High-value areas shrank significantly due to ecological space degradation. The planning-oriented ecological development scenario is the optimal scenario, with the highest ESV of CNY 189,240.29 million, which is higher than the status quo, inertia development scenario, and cropland protection scenario by 9.69%, 23.27%, and 9.53%, respectively. Taking the land use patterns under the ecological development scenario as the re-naturalization objective, 12 re-naturalization pathways totaling 686.88 km2 were identified. Cropland to forestland and built-up land to cropland were the largest, accounting for 67.88% and 15.02%, respectively. This study provides valuable insights into ecological planning and re-naturalization in urbanized areas.

道路边坡是一种受人为活动持续干扰的人造生境。因受种子可用性和苛刻立地环境的双重限制,道路边坡植被恢复一直是困扰林业管理者的难题。尽管现有边坡恢复工程技术已相对成熟,但恢复的植物群落通常缺乏自然性和可持续性,其重要原因之一在于既有恢复技术通常忽略群落的形成规律及植物性状在群落构建过程中的潜在作用。植物功能性状分析已成为理解植物群落生态学过程和模式的基本工具,但种子功能性状的重要性在很大程度上仍被忽视,尤其是与种子扩散、沉淀、萌发等群落形成过程密切相关的性状。基于此,为更好理解种子功能性状在边坡植物群落形成过程中的作用,本研究立足于道路边坡生物和非生物环境特征及其生态限制,对既有相关研究进行总结,剖析自然条件下影响植物在道路边坡定植的关键因素,并从种子功能性状角度概述植物种子在扩散、沉淀和萌发等早期群落建立过程中适应边坡环境的生态对策,同时阐述种子功能性状在群落恢复预测以及恢复植物筛选等方面的潜力。总体而言,与种子扩散、沉淀和萌发能力相关的种子性状对植物在道路边坡上成功定植至关重要。演替早期,种源短缺和苛刻非生物环境是影响边坡植物群落建立的主要因素。适应边坡环境的植物,通常在种子扩散、沉淀和萌发等方面有特殊的生态策略,以适应道路边坡强地表径流冲刷、干旱、贫瘠的环境。对相关成果进行总结有利于更好从种子性状角度了解道路边坡早期植物群落的形成过程和规律及种子性状在该过程中的作用和潜力,为生态敏感区内道路边坡植被恢复研究与实践提供理论支撑。

Landscapes in urban waterfront spaces are of high societal value as they can meet people's physical, psychological, and social needs for health and well-being, but the relationship between waterfront landscape features and public health benefits has yet to be clarified. From the perspective of blue health, this paper takes blue spaces along the Min River of Fuzhou City as the research object. It constructs the mediation model of "Waterfront landscape characteristic (WLC)-> Water-friendly environmental preference (WEP)-> Emotional benefit (EB)". The role of WEP in the mechanisms linking WLC and EB in different waterfront spaces was explored through the quantification of indicators, questionnaires, and physiological measurements. The main results showed that (1) the ability of different types of waterfront spaces to arouse positive emotions in the population is characterized by blue-dominated space > co-dominated space > green-dominated space, while the opposite is true in terms of inducing negative emotions; (2) green visibility, blue visibility, naturalness, water-friendliness, and openness are all significantly related to EBs and could affect positive emotions either directly or mediated by WEPs, but openness seems not to affect negative emotions through WEPs; (3) cleanliness affects the population's WEP for the coherence dimension, but has no significant role in improving EBs. This study could expand new ideas for research in habitat health, provide a reference for embodied evidence-based waterfront landscape design, and help promote the construction and development of healthy cities.

Ecosystem benefits and services assessments are widely used in the current urban ecological management strategies to enhance benefits of ecosystems to urban residents, but ecosystems are not benign entities that exist solely for human benefit. Plagues, diseases, and other ecosystem-generated health risks (EHRs) have caused huge losses of life and property. In promoting systematic and comprehensive urban development and the quality of life for residents, Risk reduction for EHRs cannot be ignored. As existing studies of EHRs mapping remain relatively few. This paper proposed a mapping method based on vegetation census data for two EHRs: human-bat contact infection risk (HBCIR) and human-pollen contact sensitization risk (HPCSR). Results showed that: (1) The bat distribution risk (SBR) and the pollen sensitizing plant distribution risk (ROSDmean) were higher in woodlands and areas around reservoirs where habitat conditions are better across the city. (2) The areas with higher HBCIR and HPCSR were mainly located in the central and western parts of Shenzhen, especially in the surrounding densely populated areas with better habitat conditions. (3) All streets differed significantly from each other in HBCIR and HPCSR distribution characteristics, three streets, Huafu, Meilin and Donghu, had higher risk values. The results can provide guidance to policymaker in their work on biodiversity conservation, health risk control, and tree species application. Additionally, the methodology adopted in this study may inspire future researches on the spatialization of other EHRs.

It is essential to better integrate wilderness representations of different stakeholders into wilderness conservation. The way in which local residents and other stakeholders frame the construction of wilderness of protected areas in developing countries are poorly understood. In these areas, land use policy and decision may lead to conflicts. This study aims to explore existing public wilderness representations using a questionnaire survey ( n = 514) administered amongst tourists and other stakeholders in the Wuyishan National Park, in southeast China. The spatial differences in public representations of wilderness across different stakeholder groups were compared against expert knowledge. We found that integrated wilderness representation maps of different stakeholder groups were consistent, namely 'area where wild animals live', 'area with no human influence', 'a barren and lonely area'. However, three sub -representations of the individual stakeholders varied significantly. Moreover, expert -based wilderness mapping did not reflect public representations accurately, and an integrated wilderness quality map considering wilderness representations across both stakeholders and experts can better identify detailed wilderness areas. Our study provides new insights and technical support for future exploration of wilderness conservation and mapping in China and other countries with insufficient awareness of wilderness values and investigations in a regional scale.
