Abstract :
Solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) is used to estimate terrestrial gross primary production (GPP) due to its physiological link to photosynthesis. However, strong angular variations in satellite-observed SIF (SIFobs), especially for forest canopies with a high structural heterogeneity, hampers robust estimation of GPP. Here, we use directional SIFobs datasets from OCO-2 and TROPOMI satellite sensors and the 3D discrete anisotropic radiative transfer model to investigate the directional properties of far-red SIFobs and their relationships with two GPP products obtained from MODIS and FluxCom datasets for three European forest types with contrasting canopy structures, i.e., boreal, temperate and Mediterranean forests. We found bowl-like angular distribution patterns of SIFobs in both observed and simulated boreal and temperate forests, but no generic distribution pattern of SIFobs was found for the Mediterranean forest. In our GPP estimation of boreal forest, oblique SIFobs performed better than the widely used nadir SIFobs. However, we did not find an optimal view angle suitable for all three forest types. Further, the angular dependencies and forest structure impacts present in SIFobs were found to still propagate into the estimation of total emitted SIF (SIFtotal), which generally regarded as free of these confounding effects. Finally, our results demonstrate that two commonly used variables, i.e., SIFobs with a constant viewing angle and the approximated SIFtotal, both fail to produce a robust relationship with GPP for the Mediterranean forest. These findings highlight the importance of forest canopy structural heterogeneity, including forest floor, on interpretation of directional satellite SIF observations, even when corrected and expressed as a total canopy SIF emission.

Abstract :
The form of inorganic N in soil is governed by N transformations, but the relationship between the soil N transformation dynamics and the N uptake by plants is unclear. The effect of liming and nitrification inhibitor on crop N uptake efficiency (NUE) and N loss due to altered soil N processes was investigated using a (15) N tracing approach. Crops with different N uptake strategies (sweet potato (Dioscorea esculenta L.); an ammonium-N preferring plant and pakchoi (Brassica chinensis L.); a nitrate-N preferring plant) were grown in two agricultural soils with different pH values with or without lime and nitrification inhibitor (3,4-dimethylpyrazole phosphate, DMPP). We monitored the effects of (15) N-nitrate or (15) N-ammonium on the plant biomass and NUE, residual soil N, leachate, and emitted gas. The NUE of pakchoi in acidic soil was greater with nitrate than with ammonium; however, when lime was applied, the NUE of pakchoi increased significantly compared to ammonium alone. The NUE of pakchoi was not affected by N source in the alkaline soil, but application of DMPP together with ammonium significantly reduced NUE of pakchoi compared to ammonium alone. The N source had no effect on the NUE of sweet potato in acidic or alkaline soils, while NUE increased significantly after application of lime and ammonium (31.3%) and with application of DMPP (32.4%) compared to ammonium alone (30% in acidic soil and 23% in alkaline soil). Pakchoi NUE was significantly (p < 0.05) related to gross mineralization rate and the inorganic N supply capacity. Nitrous oxide emissions after N fertilization were greater in the alkaline than in acid soil greater after ammonium than after nitrate application. Since DMPP together with ammonium reduced N2O losses from the alkaline soil, this indicates the importance of nitrification as an N2O production process. Nitrate leaching was greater with lime and ammonium application compared to ammonium alone in the acidic soil, whereas the opposite occurred for ammonium leaching. In summary, crop NUE can be significantly increased by lime treatment whereas the addition of DMPP also increased the NUE of sweet potato, which prefer ammonium, grown in the alkaline soil.

Abstract :
Point cloud filtering is a crucial step in most airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) applications. Many filtering algorithms have been proposed, but the filtering effect has some limitations in complex environments. To improve the filtering effect in complex terrain, a multilevel adaptive filter (MAF) combining morphological reconstruction and thin plate spline (TPS) interpolation is proposed. The digital elevation model (DEM) generated in each iteration is used as the marker image for morphological reconstruction to extract ground pixels, and an adaptive residual threshold is achieved by using terrain gradient as a compensation. The benchmark dataset provided by the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS) and another LiDAR dataset in northwestern China were used to evaluate the filtering performance of MAF. For the ISPRS benchmark dataset, MAF obtained the lowest average total error (3.72%) and highest average kappa coefficient (87.16%) compared with eight classic filtering algorithms. For the dataset in northwestern China, the DEM generated from the filtering result of MAF obtained higher accuracy than the filtering result of TerraScan. Overall, the MAF achieved promising results without considering the selection of filtering window, which may enhance the robustness and applicability of the algorithm in different environments.
