The Covid-19 Pandemic is Associated with the Spread of Antibiotic Resistance Genes in Soils Across China EI

Abstract :

The COVID-19 pandemic had a profound impact on the environment due to the extensive use of disinfectants to control the virus. While the dramatic increase in the use of disinfectants during the COVID-19 pandemic has been shown to affect antibiotic resistome in rivers, the impact on soils remains underexplored. Here, we collected 332 metagenomic farm soil samples across China before (2017-2019) and during (2020-2022) the COVID-19 pandemic and compared differences in antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), mobile genetic elements (MGEs), and bacterial community characteristics. Our results revealed a significant increase in the abundance of ARGs and MGEs during the COVID-19 pandemic compared to the pre-pandemic period. Additionally, we observed a significant rise in the abundance of potentially pathogenic bacteria during the pandemic, including Pseudomonas, Salmonella, and Vibrio, while changes in human activities during the COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted the composition of soil bacterial communities. Partial Least Squares Path Modeling indicated that the use of disinfectants increased the dissemination of ARGs by elevating the abundance of MGEs. Collectively, these findings suggest that the increased use of disinfectants to control the SARS-CoV-2 virus, likely contributed the spread of ARGs in soils during the COVID-19 pandemic. © 2024, The Authors. Abstract :

This study expands the original two-dimensional carbon footprint model into a three-dimensional model form. Introduce two indicators of carbon footprint depth (CFdepth) and size (CFsize) to form a three-dimensional carbon footprint model (CF3D), which is used to respectively represent the occupation and consumption of natural capital reserves by human activities' carbon emissions. Based on the 3D carbon footprint model, this paper calculated the CFsize, CFdepth, and CF3D for four different urban agglomerations of China (BTH, YRD, PRD, and CY) spanning from 2000 to 2017. Building on this, the study analyzed the spatial-temporal and dynamic characteristics of the multivariate collaboration between CFsize, CFdepth, and GDP using a multivariate collaborative relationship model. The research findings reveal that (1) from 2000 to 2017, the utilization of natural capital stock in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH), Yangtze River Delta (YRD), Pearl River Delta (PRD), and Chengyu (CY) urban agglomerations were in an unsustainable development state, with their CFdepth exceeding 1. Among these regions, the degree of natural capital consumption was PRD > BTH > YRD > CY. (2) There manifests an obvious regional complementary characteristic of CFsize and CFdepth. Regions coupled with abundant land resources (such as Chengde and Hangzhou) tend to have high CFsize and low CFdepth, whereas area with fewer land resources (such as Tianjin and Shanghai) exhibits the opposite pattern. (3) In four urban agglomerations, the relationship of temporal multivariate collaboration among CFsize, CFdepth, and GDP exhibits a declining trend from 2000 to 2017, with an average value ranging from 0.4 to 0.6. The change in their multivariate spatial collaboration was not pronounced throughout the course of the study.

Abstract :

Extreme rainfall-induced flooding significantly impacts healthcare emergency services. Current research on optimizing the deployment of healthcare emergency facilities under flooding scenarios remains limited, particularly in terms of considering both the population coverage and spatial coverage. Based on the simulation of urban flooding, this study proposes a dual-constrained emergency facility location optimization model that balances both the newly added service population and newly service scope, and its effectiveness is validated in the Maozhou River Basin in Shenzhen. The results indicate that urban flooding in the study area is caused by insufficient drainage capacity and low-lying topography, with the former being the dominant contributing factor. Additionally, rainfall events exceeding a 78 mm/h(10-year threshold) alter the shortest access routes to healthcare emergency services for over 50 % of the population.Compared with the decrease in traffic speed, impassable roads due to flooding exert a greater effect on healthcare emergency services. Lastly, optimization outcomes under three flooding scenarios demonstrate the applicability of our model, accurately determining the location of high priority healthcare emergency facilities. Non-inundated populations now achieve assured 15min healthcare emergency response. This study provides a scientific foundation for urban emergency departments to plan resource allocation, reducing risks from healthcare delays in non-inundated areas.

County-level cropland fragmentation in China (1990-2023): a bidirectional transformation perspective SCIE

Cropland fragmentation (CLF) studies often overlook bidirectional land transformations. This study reassesses county-level CLF in China (1990-2023) using a 30 m-resolution Landsat-based dataset and a novel Modified Landscape Division Index to capture both cropland gains (transfer-in) and losses (transfer-out). We find pronounced CLF increases in urbanized plains, notably the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain (6.13 x 10(-2) y), Northeast China Plain (3.69 x 10(-2) y), and Sichuan Basin (4.97 x 10(-2) y), driven primarily by urbanization (39.5% contribution to CLF from impervious surfaces). Conversely, cropland gains from forests and grasslands mitigate fragmentation, with forest-to-cropland conversion reducing CLF by 40.3%. Counties with CLF increases due to losses outnumber those with decreases by 5.5 times. Regression analysis reveals strong correlations between area changes and CLF (p < 0.01). These insights are relevant for urbanizing regions globally, such as Southeast Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, highlighting the need for policies like zoning regulations and reforestation incentives to balance urban expansion with cropland restoration for sustainable land use and food security.

Spatial Climate Heterogeneity as a Moderator of Vegetation Migration Dynamics on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau SCIE

Abstract :

Although diverse climates shape complex vegetation distribution globally, how climate heterogeneity regulates the impact of climate change on vegetation migration remains unclear. In this study, we used high-resolution K & ouml;ppen-Geiger climate classifications to assess climate heterogeneity across the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau from 1990 to 2020. We found that areas with higher climate heterogeneity support greater vegetation adaptability and migration potential in response to changing climate conditions. Including climate heterogeneity in species distribution models clearly confirmed that climate heterogeneity promotes vegetation migration. Our results show that while rising temperatures generally limit vegetation migration, climate heterogeneity can help offset this effect by offering climatic refugia and expanding suitable habitat ranges. The interaction between climate heterogeneity and temperature increase had a positive moderating effect. By incorporating this factor, our approach provides a more accurate understanding of vegetation dynamics and supports the development of adaptive conservation strategies for biodiversity.

The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly impacted the environment due to changes in human activities, including the widespread use of disinfectants. While previous studies have shown that increased disinfectant use during the pandemic affected the antibiotic resistome in aquatic environments, its impact on soils remains largely unexplored. In this study, we analyzed 332 soil metagenomic samples collected across China before (2017-2019) and during (2020-2022) the pandemic to assess the effects on antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), mobile genetic elements (MGEs), and the soil bacterial community. Our results revealed a significant increase in the abundance of ARGs and MGEs in farmland soils during the COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, the abundance of potentially pathogenic bacteria, such as Pseudomonas, Salmonella, and Vibrio, increased significantly during the pandemic. Partial least squares path modeling indicated that disinfectant use was a key factor associated with the spread of ARGs, primarily by enhancing MGE-mediated gene transfer. These findings suggest that shifts in human activity during the pandemic have contributed to the dissemination of soil ARGs and underscore the importance of managing microbial resistance within the One Health framework.

Decoupling and drivers of freshwater boundary pressures in Haihe River Basin: insights for sustainable urban water management SCIE

Freshwater scarcity poses critical challenges to sustainable urban development, yet existing strategies inadequately address the spatial heterogeneity across economically and geographically diverse regions such as China's Haihe River Basin (HRB). This study applies the planetary boundary framework to quantify regional freshwater boundary pressure (RFBP) across 25 cities in the HRB from 2011 to 2019. A decoupling model and Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index (LMDI) decomposition based on the extended IPAT equation identify key drivers behind changes in RFBP. Results reveal substantial disparities among cities: only five cities achieved economic growth while successfully reducing freshwater pressure, with agriculture dominating freshwater extraction. Affluence and regional freshwater boundary (RFB) constraints emerge as primary drivers influencing freshwater sustainability. Transitioning toward less water-intensive service economies significantly alleviates freshwater pressure, particularly in economically advanced cities such as Beijing and Shijiazhuang. Improving agricultural water-use efficiency, promoting economic restructuring, and expanding regional freshwater boundaries are recommended as critical policy interventions. These findings provide actionable guidance for water resource governance applicable to similar water-scarce urban regions.
