Cross-border e-commerce and carbon emission reduction: A quasi-natural experiment based on the establishment of cross-border e-commerce comprehensive pilot zones SSCI
期刊论文 | 2025 , 88 , 452-475 | ECONOMIC ANALYSIS AND POLICY
Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

Cross-border e-commerce, as a novel form of trade in the digital economy era, represents a critical pathway for advancing low-carbon development in the economy and society. This research adopts China's cross-border e-commerce comprehensive pilot zone (CEPZ) as a quasi-natural experiment. It applies a multi-period DID model and city statistical data, customs import-export data, as well as national tax survey data to systematically investigate the impact of the CEPZ policy on the reduction of carbon emissions. The research findings reveal that the establishment of the CEPZs significantly promotes carbon emissions reduction in both cities and enterprises. Furthermore, the promotional effect of the CEPZs on carbon emissions reduction exhibits substantial heterogeneity. At the urban level, CEPZs primarily facilitate the reduction of carbon emissions in areas characterized by well-developed digital infrastructure, inland regions, and non-traditional industrial cities. At the enterprise level, the CEPZs favor carbon emissions reduction in enterprises with high carbon intensity and low market competition. Mechanism analysis underscores that the CEPZs play a crucial role in driving carbon emissions reduction through three mechanisms, including the producer services agglomeration effects, industrial digitalization effects, and resource allocation optimization effects. Further analysis indicates that although the CEPZs generate significant positive spillover effects on carbon emissions reduction in neighboring enterprises, they do not propel carbon emissions reduction in adjacent cities. The conclusions offer empirical evidence and policy insights to align the development of new trade formats with low-carbon socioeconomic transitions.

Abstract&Keyword Cite

Abstract :

Cross-border e-commerce exemplifies the profound integration of digital technology within the realm of international trade. While it facilitates the growth of foreign trade, it also has the potential to yield significant environmental benefits. This study utilizes China's Cross-Border E-commerce Pilot Zone (CEPZ) as a quasi-natural experiment and applies a multi-period DID model to systematically assess the impact of cross-border e-commerce on urban energy efficiency. The findings indicate that cross-border e-commerce significantly enhances urban energy efficiency, with this conclusion remaining robust following a series of tests. Mechanism analysis reveals that economies of scale effects, market competition effects, and industrial digitization effects serve as pathways through which cross-border e-commerce enhances city energy efficiency. Furthermore, the effects of cross-border e-commerce on energy efficiency improvements display notable heterogeneity. Specifically, cities with higher levels of marketization, higher levels of manufacturing-agglomeration, and those prioritized for environmental protection experience more pronounced enhancements in energy efficiency. Additionally, this paper employs the National Tax Survey Data to provide empirical evidence at the firm-level that corroborates these findings. Overall, these conclusions provide valuable empirical support for the synergistic integration of trade and energy-saving policies.

Abstract :

The digital economy plays a pivotal role in driving the transformation of old and new energy sources and improving total factor productivity in China. This study focuses on Chinese A-share listed companies in Shanghai and Shenzhen. Using the entropy weight method, the digital economy indexes are evaluated based on digital industrialization and industrial digitization. The panel fixed effect model and mediation effect model are utilized to quantitatively analyze the effects and mechanisms of the digital economy on total factor productivity. The findings suggest that the digital economy significantly enhances total factor productivity, primarily through mechanisms such as research and development (R&D) and innovation, alleviation of financing constraints, and economies of scale. The digital economy has a stronger impact on the total factor productivity of enterprises in the eastern region, the regions with high levels of traditional infrastructure development, high-competitive industries and non-state-owned enterprises. This study focuses on exploring the productivity effects of the digital economy in a more detailed manner. The findings of this study will provide valuable policy recommendations and insights for improving the efficiency of enterprises.

Abstract :

Facilitating pollution reduction in manufacturing enterprises is crucial for implementing the new development concept and achieving sustainable, environmentally friendly growth. This research delves into the influence of digital inputs on pollution emission reduction in Chinese manufacturing enterprises. The study utilizes a combination of the World Input-Output Database, the Chinese Industrial Enterprises Database, and the Chinese Industrial Enterprises Pollution Emission Database covering the period from 2000 to 2012. The findings reveal that digital inputs make a significant contribution to pollution reduction in Chinese manufacturing enterprises. Specifically, digital software inputs and foreign digital factor inputs display more pronounced effects on pollution reduction. The analysis of the mechanism reveals that the pollution reduction effects of digital inputs in manufacturing enterprises can be attributed to several effective mechanisms: the enhancement of energy efficiency, technological innovation, and servitization, as well as the crowding-out effect of pollution control investment. The former mechanisms demonstrate a promoting effect, while the latter exhibits an inhibiting effect. The impact of digital inputs on pollution reduction in manufacturing enterprises displays heterogeneity, with a more significant emission reduction effect observed in industries facing higher environmental regulatory intensity, digitization-unrelated industries, non-state-owned firms, and firms with higher levels of financing constraints. These findings offer empirical evidence and serve as a policy foundation for promoting digital transformation and achieving green economic development in China.

服务型制造如何影响企业环境绩效
期刊论文 | 2022 , 44 (11) , 167-187 | 经济管理
Abstract&Keyword Cite
