Nutrient enrichment enhances copper stress tolerance in adult sporophytes of Saccharina japonica (Phaeophyceae) SCIE

Abstract :

Copper (Cu) is a typical metal pollutant that is essential for marine organisms in trace amounts but becomes highly toxic at elevated concentrations. Eutrophication, a common environmental issue in coastal regions, further complicates the ecological dynamics. However, limited research has explored the potential interactive effects of Cu pollution and nutrient enrichment on cultivated seaweed. In this study, we investigated the individual and combined effects of nutrient availability (enriched vs. non-enriched seawater) and Cu exposure (natural seawater as control; 0.2 mu mol L-1, LCu; 0.5 mu mol L-1, MCu; 1 mu mol L-1, HCu) on the growth, photosynthetic activity, and biochemical composition of adult sporophytes of Saccharina japonica. The results indicated that under non-enriched nutrient conditions, the addition of 0.2 mu mol L-1 Cu had no significant effect on growth or most of chlorophyll fluorescence parameters, indicating a neutral effect of low-dose Cu. In contrast, exposure to 0.5 and 1 mu mol L-1 Cu under non-enriched nutrient conditions resulted in reduced growth, maximum quantum yield, maximum relative electron transfer rate, and soluble carbohydrate content. However, nutrient enrichment mitigated the inhibitory effects of high Cu concentrations. These findings indicate that the effects of Cu on adult S. japonica are dose-dependent and modulated by nutrient availability, with eutrophication potentially enhancing tolerance to high Cu toxicity. These results provide valuable insights into Cu toxicity assessment in seaweed farming and highlight the importance of considering interactions among environmental factors.

Abstract :

AimElucidating mechanisms underlying the formation and maintenance of communities remains a fundamental ecological question. However, the relative importance of niche and dispersal assembly might be contingent. Here, we aimed to investigate intertidal community dynamics to understand the process of community formation and maintenance. Focusing on habitat complexity, substrate age and larval dispersal rate contributes to our understanding of the impact of human activities and climate change on intertidal community change. LocationTemperate coast of China. Time Period2013-2021. Major Taxa StudiedIntertidal invertebrates, mainly including Gastropods, Bivalves, Polyplacophora and Cirripedia. MethodsWe obtained species distribution data through 9 years of field surveys on temperate coasts of China. We determined taxonomic and functional diversity combined with functional traits. We also analysed the relative importance of environmental factors, including habitat complexity, substrate age, heatwave occurrence and duration, larval dispersal rate, chlorophyll a, dissolved oxygen, nutrients (i.e., nitrate, phosphate and silicate), salinity and seawater velocity by using generalised linear mixed models and redundancy analysis. ResultsOur results show that taxonomic and functional diversity varies across natural and artificial substrates. Community biodiversity on artificial shores with low habitat complexity increases initially and reaches saturation values. However, their saturation values are still lower than those of natural substrate sites with much higher habitat complexity. Main ConclusionsHabitat complexity and substrate age primarily drive intertidal community diversity. Niche-based processes shape the structure and function of ecological communities on temperate rocky shores in China. Improving habitat complexity is crucial for enhancing both taxonomic and functional biodiversity and restoration in intertidal communities on temperate shores.

Abstract :

Biological specimens are fundamental for taxonomy and flora/fauna research. More importantly, they also play crucial roles in recording environmental impacts on morphology and behavior, which is vital for biodiversity research and conservation. However, there are few systematic studies on the patterns and drivers of bird specimen number at regional scales. This study is the first attempt to examine the relationships between bird specimen number and species traits as well as climate niche breadth in China, aiming to answer two questions: 1) how do species' temperature niche breadth and precipitation niche breadth influence specimen number? 2) which trait is most associated with bird specimen number? The associations between bird specimen number and explanatory variables were examined using ordinary least squares, generalized linear models, phylogenetic generalized linear mixed models, and multiple comparisons. The results showed that Muscicapidae was the family with the highest specimen number, and Passeriformes was the order with the highest specimen number. Bird specimen number significantly increased with larger temperature niche breadth and precipitation niche breadth. Specimen number was also positively associated with geographic range size, habitat specificity, hunting vulnerability and clutch size, but negatively associated with body size. These findings suggest that future bird specimen collection should pay more attention to birds with limited ecological niches, large body sizes, and small clutch sizes. This research enhances the use of bird specimen data to study and preserve biodiversity.

AimsLong-term climate stability, contemporary climate and environmental heterogeneity have been linked to bird diversity patterns through their direct impacts on diversification rate, as well as through their indirect effects on plant species richness, which could also directly and indirectly affect bird diversity. This study aimed to quantitatively assess whether these potential drivers could indirectly affect bird species richness through their direct effects on the diversification rate in birds in eastern Asia.LocationMainland China.TaxonBirds.MethodsUsing the distribution data of 1127 bird species across 320 prefecture cities in China and a phylogenetic tree of these bird species, we analysed the distribution patterns of bird species richness and diversification rate of all birds, passerine birds and non-passerine birds, respectively. We also investigated their relationships with long-term climate stability, contemporary climate, elevation range and plant diversity using ordinary least squares regression model and simultaneous autoregressive model. In addition, structural equation model was used to analyse whether these drivers could indirectly affect bird species richness through their direct effects on bird diversification rate.ResultsThe results showed that bird species richness and diversification rate were highest in southwestern China. Additionally, diversification rate for passerine birds was higher than non-passerine birds and all birds. Regression analyses revealed that plant species richness was the variable most associated with bird species richness and diversification rate across the three groups. Notably, results from structural equation model indicated that plant species richness, elevation range and glacial-interglacial climate change can indirectly influence bird species richness by directly affecting diversification rates.Main ConclusionsThese findings emphasize the importance of considering diversification rate when understanding the geographic distribution patterns of bird diversity. The direct and indirect effects of plant species richness, elevation range and glacial-interglacial climate change on bird diversity highlight the crucial role of mountain regions with higher plant diversity and stable paleoclimate in forming and maintaining biodiversity.

生物标本在追踪环境对生物形态和行为的影响方面发挥着关键作用,对于生物多样性研究和保护至关重要。然而,在区域尺度上,对鸟类标本数量的格局和影响因素的研究有限。本研究探讨了中国鸟类标本数量与物种性状以及气候范围之间的关系。研究主要关注两个关键问题:1)物种的温度和降水范围与标本收集数量是否相关?2)哪种性状与鸟类标本数量最相关?通过使用普通最小二乘法、广义线性模型和系统发育广义线性混合模型等多种统计模型,分析了来自国家标本平台(NSII)的941种鸟类的22,185个标本数据。研究结果显示,雀形目(63%)和鹟科(23%)标本数量最多。鸟类标本数量与较大的温度和降水范围呈正相关。此外,我们发现标本数量与地理分布范围大小、栖息地特异性、捕猎风险和窝卵数之间存在显著的正相关关系,但与体型大小呈负相关。我们的研究结果表明,普遍分布的常见鸟类物种通常有更多的标本可供研究。为了更加科学的进行标本采集工作,未来应注意关注生态位受限、地理分布范围小、捕猎风险低、体型较大和窝卵数较小的鸟类。此外,其他现代监测技术(如观鸟数据集和红外相机等)可提供这些鸟类的监测数据以进一步补充基于这些标本数据集的生态学研究。本研究通过将鸟类标本数量与气候范围和物种性状联系起来,增强了生物标本在生物多样性研究中的应用。

生物多样性在宏观尺度上不均匀分布的驱动因素主要包括生物之间的相互作用和非生物环境变量。古气候稳定性、当代气候、环境异质性等因素可以通过直接影响鸟类演化速率和植物物种丰富度等来间接塑造鸟类多样性格局。在物种丰富度、系统发育结构等方面针对中国鸟类多样性的研究已经取得了明显进展,然而,对于演化速率是否是促进鸟类多样性的重要因素的研究相对较少。本研究利用结构方程模型分析了这些驱动因素对中国鸟类多样性的直接和间接影响,旨在定量评估这些驱动因素对鸟类演化速率的影响,从而进一步分析其对于物种丰富度和系统发育结构的影响。研究结果表明,植物物种丰富度与所有鸟类、雀形目鸟类、非雀形目鸟类的演化速率、物种丰富度和系统发育结构的相关性最高;且随着植物物种丰富度和海拔范围的增加以及稳定的古气侯,所有鸟类和雀形目鸟类的演化速率增加,非雀形目鸟类的演化速率减少。值得注意的是,所有鸟类和雀形目鸟类的演化速率与其物种丰富度呈正相关,非雀形目鸟类的演化速率与其物种丰富度呈负相关;三组鸟类的演化速率都与其系统发育结构密切相关。这些结果表明了演化速率对鸟类多样性具有直接且重要的影响;揭示了不同类群鸟类演化速率与物种丰富度之间相关关系的差异;强调了不同时空尺度因子和演化速率在当代生物多样性格局形成中的重要作用,为中国鸟类多样性的保护提供重要的理论支持。

IntroductionSpecies inventories based on various data sources have been widely used in biodiversity research, conservation policy formulation, reserve designation and biodiversity resource management. In this paper, we explored the relationships of species inventories obtained from different sources and whether they would affect the inference of biodiversity patterns and their environmental drivers. MethodsWe compiled the species inventories from different data sources (observational data including large amounts of citizen-based observational records and digitalized specimens, and avifauna data extracted from avifaunas which mainly integrated professional-based species surveys, expert knowledge and documentary records) at the prefectural level in China. Then we explored the relationships of different inventories and compared the correlations between the taxonomic, phylogenetic, functional diversity calculated from different datasets and the environmental factors. Results and DiscussionThe results showed that the avifauna datasets contributed more additional species to the combined species inventories when the species richness was relatively low and vice versa. Species inventories integrated from two different data sources formed complementary relationship rather than nested or totally different relationships. In addition, the species inventories based on observational data had no obvious disadvantage or were even better at inferring the biodiversity patterns than those based on avifauna data. The stepwise multiple regression analyses showed that the best models were the ones using the species inventories combined by observational and avifauna dataset, and the best models built with different datasets included inconsistent environmental variables. Thus, the species inventories from different data sources will indeed affect the inference of the correlations between taxonomic diversity, phylogenetic diversity, functional diversity and environmental factors. Moreover, although it may be more reliable to use a combined species inventory to analyze the relationship between diversity indices and environmental factors, individualized improvement schemes should be proposed for different data sources to fill the data gaps.
