Abstract :
In order to improve the interfacial interaction between poly(ethylene glycol-co-cyclohexane-1,4-dimethanol terephthalate) (PETG) and bamboo flour, the surface of bamboo flour (BF) was modified with methyl methacrylate (MMA) using the electron transfer (AGET) atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) method. The grafted BF was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermogravimetric analysis. The MMA groups had been successfully grafted onto the BF surface and the contact angle of the grafted BF was as high as 130 degrees. The maximum flexural strength was determined to be 72 MPa for the composite containing 20 wt% modified BF, which was higher than that of the composite containing 20 wt% original BF (62 MPa). Also, the decrease in loss factor indicated that the grafting modification improved the compatibility between PETG and BF, and this conclusion was also confirmed by SEM. The results have great practical significance for the application of PETG/BF composites.

Abstract :
To enhance the durability of hemp twine (HT) in cement composite, this study focuses on a holistic approach by investigating the effects of hybrid treatments on the HT. The treatments involve alkalization, treatment with alkaline copper quaternary type D after which the treated HT were grouped into three and the three groups were coated with paraffin wax, epoxy acrylate and waste engine oil respectively, thereby generating three hybrid treatments (hybrid 1, hybrid 2 and hybrid 3). The effects of the treatments on the properties of the HT were investigated using X-ray diffractometer, thermogravimetry analysis, scanning electron microscopy and micro force testing machine and results obtained reveal that the impact of the treatments on the HT is positive. Moreover, the effects of the treatments on water absorption capacity and resistance to micro-organism attack were also investigated and interesting results were obtained.

Abstract :
Polylactic acid (PLA)/pearlescent pigments (PEPs) composites were fabricated by melt blending method and their properties were studied using a rotational rheometry, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). Because PEP could disperse uniformly in PLA matrix and would form PEP networks, there were improvements made in the flexural strength, tensile strength and impact strength of PLA composites. Interestingly, the viscosity of PLA composites reduced significantly as compared with neat PLA, indicating an improvement in processing properties. The rheological tests confirmed that the storage modulus of PLA composites decreased as PEP content increased at a given frequency. Also, there was a plateau at low frequency range, which was a sign of PEP networks formation. The DMA tests showed that the storage modulus of PLA composite increased with PEP content, suggesting the enhancement of rigidity. According to the XRD results, no change was observed in the crystal structure of PLA in the presence of PEP. The addition of PEP did not change melting temperature, but the glass transition temperature increased a little, and the cold crystallization temperature of PLA decreased largely. The DSC results also showed that nucleation ability of PLA was enhanced by addition of PEP at low cooling rates, but the whole crystallization process of PLA in composite was inhibited at higher cooling rates. This conclusion was also confirmed by the results of crystallization kinetics.

Abstract :
This study was aimed at preparing electromagnetic interference ( EMI) shielding materials based on carbon black ( CB), carbon fiber ( CF), bamboo charcoal ( BC), and epoxy resin. The effects of adding bamboo charcoal on the mechanical properties and electrical resistivity of epoxy composites were studied. Scanning electron microscopic ( SEM) analysis, electrical resistivity, and electromagnetic interference ( EMI) shielding effectiveness were also investigated. The composites were prepared at 120 degrees C by the curing-molding method through blending the fillers in epoxy resin. The results revealed that the BC/CB and BC/CF composites had perfect conductive network structure and resulted in better dynamic thermal mechanical properties. The electrical resistivity declined with the increase of bamboo charcoal contents; consequently, the EMI shielding effectiveness improved gradually. The lowest electrical resistivity, down to 0.071 Omega.m, corresponded to the best EMI shielding effectiveness of BC/CF composites, which could be above 60 dB over a frequency range of 30 MHz to 1500 MHz while the carbon fiber content was at 40 wt.%.

Abstract :
Carbon fiber (CF) paper is an excellent material for use in electric heating wood floors systems. In this paper, a CF paper-based electric heating wood floor was prepared using a hot pressure process. The thermal aging properties and electric heating behaviors of the CF paper-based wood floors were studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and a temperature recorder. The CF paper exhibited excellent thermal stability, and its structure and morphology did not show any changes after exposure to 110 degrees C for 15 h. The surface temperature of the CF paper increased as input voltage increased. The positioning of CF paper in the middle of wood floors was believed to be the optimum design for electric heating wood floors. Theoretical calculations showed that the CF paper based electric heating wood floors (1.1 m(2)) could increase room (3 m x 4 m x 2.6 m) temperature by 12.9 degrees C.

Abstract :
Acrylonitrile-styrene-acrylate/natural graphite/carbon nanofiber composites (ASA/NG/CNF) were prepared using a melting blending method. The effects of CNFs on the morphology, rheological properties, dynamical mechanical properties, electrical resistivity, and electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) were studied using a scanning electron microscope, a rotational rheometer, and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). The addition of CNFs changed the oriented and laminated structure of the ASA/NG composite. The flexural strength of the ASA composite reached a maximum at 6% CNF, and then it began to decrease. The addition of CNFs did not alter the glass-transition temperature of ASA, but it largely increased the storage modulus of the composite in DMA tests. In the rheological measurements, the complex viscosity and storage modulus of the composite increased as CNF content increased, and the resistance to creep of the composites was significantly increased by the addition of CNFs. The electrical resistivity of the ASA composites decreased from 49.8 cm to 2.3 cm as the CNF content was increased from 0 to 12%. At the same time, the EMI properties of the composites rose from 15 dB to 30 dB in the frequency range 30-1500 MHz. (c) 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2017, 134, 45455.
